Ascending the Nordenskjöld Mountain

Trek description

This stunning eight-hour mountain trek takes us up through narrow and steep valleys, and high ridges above the glaciers south of Longyearbyen, to the final 1,050 metre ascent, right at the cloud base, before descending via the Plateau Mountain.

Timetable

09:00: We meet up (see start location below) and get acquainted before heading up through a narrow valley on the side of the mountain. Behind us, we get a clear view to the Longyear Glacier and the roaring melt-water river below it.

12:00: We walk cross the "lunar" landscape of the high-moraine on the shoulder of Nordenskjöld and follow a narrow ridge up to a high plateau. Here we lunch, while enjoying the silence and the peaks all around us.

14:00: We finally arive at the summit of the Nordenskjöld Mountain, where we take in the majestic view, usually just below the cloud base at 1,050 metres. We now stand just above the near-vertical hanging glacier on the side of Nordenskjöld.

17:00: Descend through a different path from the mountain top to reach the Plateau Mountain west of Longeyar. From here, we cross the flat top of this table mountain, with a view to the city far below usand we make our final descent with a view to the Ice Fjord below us.
