Evening Trek on the Mountain Plateau

Trek description

This three-hour mountain trek takes us up the Plateau Mountain with its majestic view of Longyearbyen and the bird colonies in the rocks below. We visit the memorial of a polar bear attack high up on the plateau. We then head for a small valley at the foot of the majestic Mount Nordenskiold, before descending with a view to the gleaming Longyear Glacier below us.

Timetable, morning

09:00: We meet up (see start location below) and get acquainted before heading up the slopes of the Plateau Mountain. Behind us, we get a clear view to the Ice Fjord Below and, with luck, we may see whales in the water.

10:00: We walk the edge with a breathtaking view to the Advent Valley and Longyearbyen far below us. Birds nest on the sheer rock wall below us and we see the enterance of the first mine in the Longyear Valley from above.

12:00: We visit the memorial of a polar bear attack and follow the old miners’ telegraph poles to the foot of Mount Nordenskiold. We then head down through a steep valley back and flanked by a roaring river back into town with a view to the Longyear Glacier.
