This six-hour mountain trek takes is high above Longyearbyen, across the gleaming Lars Glacier, before ascending the peak known as the Trollstone. From here, we take in the view of the glaciers below us and the endless mountainscapes south of Longyear. We head down by different paths and take a brief break on the viewpoint of the Sarcophagus Mountain before continuing our descent. Safely down on the other side of the mountains, we walk across the Longyear Glacier before finally catching sight of civilisation once again.
09:00: We meet up (see start location below) and get acquainted before heading up the slopes of the Sarcophagus Mountain. Behind us, we get a clear view to the city as it vanishes below us and the deep blue Ice Fjord beyond.
12:00: We walk cross the gleaming ice field of the Lars Glacier and follow the curvature of the ridge up to the peak of the Trollstone Mountain, 849 metres above sea level. Here we lunch, while enjoying the silence and the peaks all around us.
15:00: We head down through different paths to reach the point of the Sarcophagus Mountain and take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the valley below and the Ice Fjord on the horizon. Safely down on the other side of the mountain, we walk across the white planes of Longyear Glacier before finally catching a glimpse of civilisation once again. Finally, we cross the glacier, walking on 15 metres of solid ice before finally catching sight of Longyear City beyond the rocky river delta.
On this journey you have the opportunity to develop the skills you need to do your own multy-day treks through the Arctic summer: Route planning and navigation, calculating provisions, basic safety routines and wise gear selection.
